Advancing linear slide bearings for 25 years with "sliding vs. rolling" technology

An alternative to recirculating ball bearings

Since 1985, we have designed maintenance-free slide bearings for shafts with plastic liners, which are available from a range of materials depending upon your application’s requirements—high temperatures, FDA-compliance, chemical resistance and other technical needs. Our patented split-design for our plastic liners allows for easy assembly onto the linear shaft while it remains still in place. The built-in slide pads also wipe away debris, making drylin® R linear shafts ideal for use in dirty environments.

Drylin® R linear slide bearings are also dimensionally equal to standard recirculating ball bearings for easy retrofitting or replacement. We offer our linear bearing selection with stainless steel housings or anodized aluminum housings—both metric and imperial sizes.

Specifically used in industries such as packaging machinery, medical and laboratory equipment, kiosks, vending and 3D printing.

Benefits:
  • Dimensionally identical to standard recirculating ball bearings
  • Corrosion resistant (with hard-anodized & 300-series components available)
  • Dirt resistant, lightweight, for all shaft materials
  • Easily-replaceable plastic bearing liners keep installation time to a minimum
  • Various liner materials & housing options
  • Aluminum, steel, stainless steel & carbon fiber shafts
  • Up to 250°C (482°F) long-term (depending on materials)

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

  • What material options are available for drylin® R?

drylin® R shafting is available in hard anodized aluminum (AW 6061/6060), stainless steel (420C/440B/304/316/hard chromed), carbon fiber, and steel (CF-53). For bearing material, igus® has offerings of J, J200, E7, X, A180, and A160.

  • What are the lengths of drylin® R shafts/rails?

The max length of drylin® R shafting ranges from 3,000mm – 6,000mm depending on the chosen material and diameter of the shafting.

  • Is custom machining available?

igus® does provide custom machining of drylin® R shafting. Custom solutions can be configured using our online configurator tool. If your part cannot be configured with the tool, please send us a drawing for internal review and quoting.

  • How do I size my slide bearings system? How long will it last? What are limits to load and speed?

igus® has unique online configuration tools to assist in selecting the best size system for your application needs. The configuration tools use thousands of hours of real-world test data from our test lab in Germany. We provide information including required drive force and safety factors of the system, as well as lifetime expectancy of our liners.

  • Do drylin® R slide bearings require lubrication?

drylin® R composite polymer bearings incorporate self-lubricating technology that keep the bearings consistently and adequately lubricated. As a result they are dry-running and require zero external lubrication.

  • How do I mount my drylin® R slide bearings system?

drylin® R shafting is available in supported and unsupported varieties. When mounting unsupported shafting, it is important to consider deflection, or bending, of the shaft.

  • What types of housings are available for drylin® R slide bearings?

igus® provides a number of off-the-shelf pillow blocks as well as universal adapters to fit into prefabricated housings.

  • Can the bearings' liners be replaced?

drylin® R bearings come with cost-effective, easy-to-install replacement liner in all available materials. These liners have special grooves which lock them within our housings. Split housing options are also available for easier assembly.

  • Is drylin® R interchangeable with ball bearing systems?

drylin® R was designed to be dimensionally interchangeable with all recirculating ball bearings of the same diameter, and is available in both imperial and metric measurements.

  • Are any FDA-compliant options available?

    drylin® R is available in two FDA-compliant materials: A180 and A160.

  • How do I align linear rails?

Most drylin® R systems require two rails with precision alignment to prevent jamming. drylin® R rails should be aligned using the following guide: Aligning Rails 101. Additionally, our carriages have an option for floating carriages to help increase clearance between the shaft and liners to help with any misalignment of the rails after installation.

  • What are common industries drylin® R is used in?

drylin® R is robust, hygienic, and excellent in dirty or wet environments. As a result it is often found in agriculturepackaging3D printers, and automation industries.
